The importance and reasons for using intimate lubricant
The vagina makes its own natural lubrication that helps aid sexual activity. If natural is not enough artificial lubricant, lube can help make it more comfortable.
Lubricant reduces friction in the vagina increasing comfort during sex and minimising any soreness or irritation.
Vaginal dryness is very common. Artificial lube reduces this and are available in many different textures, flavours and materials to suit a persons needs and preference.
Chronic vaginal dryness can signal menopause. As a person ages, the tissue of the vagina thins. During and after menopause the body produces less estrogen, which leads to less vaginal secretions making it feel dry. Lube can be the answer during sexual activity.
But if you associate lube with vaginal dryness only it’s time to step out of the box. The logic works well… wetter the better. Now think of less friction, smoother skin and all round better sex. No matter your gender, age or stage in life. Lube makes sex more pleasurable.
What type should I buy?
Think about the different types out there when choosing what’s best for you.
Water.
Silicone.
Oil.
Hybrid, combining a few of the above.
*Hybrid lubes often combine water and silicone.
Water-based
The “versatile” lube. These can be used in practically any activity you can think up. Even involving silicone toys and usually condoms – both latex and non latex. In fact, water based lube may decrease the risk of condom breakage.
It can also be popular because:- it won’t stain your sheets, easy on the skin, and washes off easily with water.
Silicone based
This type of lube is silky and soft on your intimate parts. Since it is hypoallergenic, most people won’t experience a reaction. It also tends to last longer, so if you want something longer lasting that needs to be reapplied less often this may be for you…
The only downside is it can deteriorate the surface of silicone toys, making them less sanitary, as it creates abrasions in the silicone where bacteria can grow. Silicone based lube is safe to use with condoms.
Oil based
If you are someone who can’t be bothered to reapply, this is the lube for you. Oil based lubes make for good sexy fun, but the downside comes if you are using latex condoms. This type of lube increases the risk of ripping or tearing condoms, they are also associated with higher rates of bacterial infections and can be very difficult to remove from sheets.
Natural lube
This type of lube is the one you should have no worries about what you are putting down there. Look for ones that have natural ingredients and a small number of them.
So go ahead apply as much or as little as you want…where you need it to be.
After you have made your choice, you may want to warm it up in your hands.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Flavoured, warming, tingling lubes, which can be fun, but can alter the PH level of the vagina, which should be 3.5 to 4.5. So choose a lube with the similar level.
But just remember lube is the simple way to take it to another level, so go ahead and lube up!
